Structure Fire – 16 Standish Woods Circle

Incident:  Structure Fire

Location:  16 Standish Woods Circle, East Harwich

Date:  04/15/2017                           Time: 15:32

At 15:32 the Harwich Fire Department received a call for a fire at 16 Standish Woods Circle.  The Deputy Fire Chief was the first to arrive and found a heavy fire condition in the rear of the single story house.  A working fire assignment was requested.

Neighbors reported there might be occupants in the building and first arriving firefighters quickly made entry into the house to search for occupants.  Due to a serious crash that had happened just prior to the fire, manpower on the initial response was limited.  Based the conditions and the possibility of trapped occupants, a second alarm was requested bringing additional resources to the scene.

Captain Craig Thornton and Firefighter Jim Clarke found a dog in the living room and quickly removed it to the front yard where it was given oxygen.  The remainder of the searches of the house revealed no occupants inside.

The heavy exterior fire was quickly knocked down, companies took another 30 minutes to completely extinguish the fire in the attic.

Investigation into cause of the fire was conducted by Harwich Fire and Harwich Police, and based on eye witness reports and interviews it appears the fire was started by careless disposal of smoking materials.

Mutual Aid companies responded from Brewster, Chatham, Dennis Eastham and assisted at the scene and by covering the Harwich Stations.
